You are the one who should have lived for 113 years!

(Demise of Professor Elliot Sperling came too early)

[Translated by Sonam Tobgyal]

Brainy among the Golden haired people, when speaking Tibetan, he is like a Tibetan. When speaking Chinese, he is like a Chinese. Having the appearance of a Uighur, he walks like a Mongolian warlord. When need to speak he is quick-witted, when it comes to writing he is sharp. He is a lefty.

He’s not a follower of any faith, but he claimed to be disciple of a lama. These are extra things.

Not out of loyalty, but speaking of your ethical courageous position, you are the one who should have lived for 113 years.

Not out of faith, but speaking from your struggles for independence of Tibet, your demise should be kept secret for thirteen years

Instead of enemy when friends pour cold ice on hopes, your stand never strayed, your ethics never changed. From high to low death is certain, for those who have no regrets after death, give reason to our existence. Close and dear things sneak into our hearts, this is the thing which left me in shock.

The impermanence of death gave you the early pass to the heaven. That call killed my soul even before my death, was the call from VOT Chinese. When I received the call, it must have been five days after Professor Elliot Sperling’s demise. (“Arok, did you hear news of Profesor Elliot Sperling’s death?” I called my wife and asked her. That was me who called her. She answered, “Yes, I saw it in today’s news”. “Father….mother… you… you… Why don’t you tell me?” cursed slipped from my mouth.

The skillful journalist questioned in short concise words, “how do you differentiate Elliot Sperling from other Tibetologists?” This heavy question added to my headache. I was left in total shock.

In times of instant news updates from the social media, facebook, wechat and others. This unfortunate news almost filled the space between earth and sky. Again, I got a call. That was my friend Drukbe. “You need to speak something about this news, aren’t you close to him?” Yes, of course, not only that, we are same student and son of the same teacher and we have clear bonding. That’s why I was still in shock.

Again, I received a call, it was Gen Tashi Tsering, “it would be good if you could join to speak at tomorrow’s memorial”. I attended the memorial, organized by collaboration of Dharamsala’s NGOs, I spoke my feeling in few words with no order. I was in short of words to describe my feelings and emotion. I am still in shock.

At the gathering, a message book was placed, in which I wrote, “If there is a heaven, please, you wait for me a little. I will soon come with a bottle of whiskey.” But the heaven is only a delusion, where nothing grows and where rain doesn’t fall on time as I heard. I don’t have to discuss about hell with you. In fact, when we suffered hell on earth, you experienced the same pain mentally.

Of course, on earth, you have sent me invitation to Indiana University, you have actually agreed to moderate the talk.

Dear Professor, as everyone has to go through the same path where you are now, is the way for the higher beings. You being the professor, you can send an invitation for which I will wait.

“I will prepare a bag full of your favorite dried meat (Yaksha Kampo) in advance.”
